Are tomatoes in Greece GM?
It was not something I had in my mind to write about but I read this question in my stats and I think that is important to write a post about this.
The answer is no. No we don’t have genetically modified tomatoes in Greece. We have many tomato hybrids but not GM.
To be correct I will give you a link from Greek Greenpeace. You can translate it easily with google translate if you want.
As they wrote in their post, they found some experimental cultivation of GM tomatoes in Greece in 1997 and they start a campaign to stop it.
A few days later, the farmers themselves destroy the GM crops from their fields. Up to 2002 all proposals for experimental cultivation of GM maize, beet, cotton, rice, etc. in Greece, refused. Farmers and consumers refuse to grow and consume GM, and in 2004 designated all prefectures of the country in GMO Free Zones.
So…
In Greece we don’t need and don’t want GM crops. We fight to keep Greece clean from GM crops. But we belong to European Union as you know and some EU countries want GM crops in their and our fields.
We are safe until now but I have no idea about the future.
P.S. As for the experimental GM tomatoes in 1997 I found something in a webpage but from someone who wanted the GM tomatoes. As he said the experimental GM cultivation it was for a tomato without the gene which causes ripening and rot after cutting. (sorry no link from me in GM fun pages)
